Overview

Artichoke leaf extract (ALE) is a botanical preparation derived from the leaves of *Cynara scolymus* (or *Cynara cardunculus*), containing bioactive polyphenols such as cynarin, chlorogenic acid, and flavonoids like luteolin. It is primarily utilized as a nutraceutical for its hepatoprotective, lipid-lowering, and antioxidant properties. The extract exerts its effects by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase to lower cholesterol, stimulating bile production (choleretic effect), and activating the Nrf2/HO-1 antioxidant signaling pathway. ALE has been clinically investigated for the management of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and hypercholesterolemia. While widely available as a dietary supplement, its clinical efficacy in reducing LDL cholesterol has shown mixed results in various populations, leading to ongoing research into standardized formulations like Pycrinil and Altilix.
