ArTiMist

ArTiMist is a sublingual spray formulation of artemether, a semi-synthetic artemisinin derivative, developed by Proto Pharma Ltd for the treatment of *Plasmodium falciparum* malaria. It is specifically designed for pediatric use, providing a rapid-acting, non-invasive alternative to intravenous or intramuscular injections in children who may have gastrointestinal complications or where parenteral access is difficult. Artemether acts as a potent blood schizonticide; its mechanism involves the interaction with intra-parasitic heme, which triggers the cleavage of its endoperoxide bridge to generate reactive oxygen species and carbon-centered free radicals. These radicals subsequently alkylate and damage essential parasite proteins and membranes, leading to rapid parasite clearance. Clinical trials have compared ArTiMist to intravenous quinine, demonstrating its efficacy in treating severe and complicated malaria in resource-limited settings.
