Artra

Artra is an oral fixed-dose combination drug containing 500 mg of glucosamine hydrochloride and 500 mg of chondroitin sulfate per tablet. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of osteoarthritis, specifically targeting the knee and hip joints. Classified as a symptomatic slow-acting drug for osteoarthritis (SYSADOA), Artra works by providing structural components essential for cartilage health. Glucosamine is a precursor for glycosaminoglycans, while chondroitin sulfate is a major component of the extracellular matrix of joint tissues. Together, they are thought to stimulate the synthesis of proteoglycans and hyaluronic acid, inhibit degradative enzymes such as matrix metalloproteinases, and exert mild anti-inflammatory effects by reducing the activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines like interleukin-1 beta. The drug is widely marketed in Russia and Eastern Europe by Unipharm.
