Overview

Arundic acid is a small molecule neuroprotective agent developed primarily as an astrocyte modulator. It acts by inhibiting the synthesis of S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B) in astrocytes, which is implicated in neuronal injury and death following brain insults such as stroke and neurodegenerative diseases. Arundic acid also exhibits additional mechanisms, including inhibition of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2), free radical scavenging, and inhibition of inducible nitric oxide synthase (NOS2). The drug was investigated for acute ischemic stroke, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and muscle weakness but development has been discontinued for these indications[1][3][5][8].
