Overview

ARV-PB1 is an isolated strain of avian orthoreovirus (ARV) being investigated as an oncolytic virus for the treatment of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). As an animal virus, it is hypothesized to bypass pre-existing anti-reovirus immunity in the human population, which often limits the efficacy of human-derived reoviruses like Pelareorep. ARV-PB1 selectively replicates within HCC cells, including those infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV), leading to cell death through the formation of multinucleated syncytia and the induction of apoptosis. Furthermore, the infection triggers the expression of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs), potentially enhancing the anti-tumor immune response. It was originally isolated and characterized by researchers at Sun Yat-sen University.
