Overview
Arzoxifene is a synthetic, nonsteroidal selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) developed for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It acts as an estrogen receptor antagonist in breast and uterine tissue while exhibiting agonist effects on bone and lipid metabolism. Arzoxifene was designed to improve upon earlier SERMs by providing enhanced efficacy with fewer side effects. The drug was developed by Eli Lilly but its clinical development was discontinued after phase 3 trials due to insufficient benefit over existing therapies.
