Overview

As-Chol liposomes are a specialized class of arsonoliposomes incorporating an arsono-cholesterol derivative (As-Chol). Arsonolipids are synthetic analogs of phospholipids where the phosphorus atom is replaced by arsenic, typically in the form of an arsonic acid group. These liposomes are designed to exploit the inherent cytotoxicity of arsenic against cancer cells while utilizing the liposomal structure to improve delivery and selectivity. The As-Chol variant specifically utilizes a cholesterol backbone, which can be linked via stable ether bonds to enhance chemical and biological stability compared to traditional ester-linked arsonolipids. Preclinical evaluations have demonstrated that As-Chol liposomes possess significant, dose-dependent anticancer activity against various cell lines, including human prostate cancer (PC-3) and Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC), by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting cell proliferation.
