AS-miR-23b is an antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) designed to target and silence microRNA-23b (miR-23b), an oncomiR that is frequently overexpressed in glioblastoma and other gliomas. By binding to miR-23b, the ASO prevents the microRNA from suppressing its direct target, the Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor gene. Restoration of VHL levels leads to the degradation of hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α) and the inhibition of the β-catenin/Tcf-4 transcriptional activity. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that treatment with AS-miR-23b reduces glioma cell survival, induces apoptosis, and suppresses tumor cell invasion and angiogenesis.
