Overview

AS1501 is an investigational macromolecular drug developed for the treatment of liver damage and liver failure, including those caused by viral, autoimmune, and drug-induced hepatitis. It acts as a TRAIL (TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand) inhibitor by binding to TRAIL and preventing its interaction with Death Receptor 5 (DR5) on cell membranes. This mechanism blocks cell apoptosis triggered by the TRAIL-DR5 pathway, thereby protecting against organ damage mediated by excessive host immune response. The drug is being developed primarily for acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), with additional potential in other conditions involving pathological apoptosis such as myocardial infarction, cerebral stroke, and possibly Alzheimer's disease. Clinical development has reached Phase 2 in China[1][2][3][4][5].
