Overview

The ASC secretome refers to the complete set of bioactive factors released by adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) into their surrounding environment. This includes a complex mixture of soluble proteins (such as cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors), extracellular vesicles (including exosomes and microvesicles), non-coding RNAs (like miRNAs), and other signaling molecules. The therapeutic effects of the ASC secretome are attributed to its immunomodulatory, proangiogenic, neurotrophic, anti-apoptotic, and regenerative properties. These effects are mediated through paracrine mechanisms that stimulate tissue repair processes such as angiogenesis, cellular proliferation/migration/differentiation, suppression of apoptosis, and modulation of immune responses. The ASC secretome is being explored as a safer alternative to direct cell therapy for various indications including cardiovascular diseases (e.g., heart failure), neurodegenerative disorders, inflammatory conditions (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis), wound healing—including diabetic wounds—and autoimmune diseases[1][2][3][5][7]. As a cell-free product derived from cultured ASCs—often autologous but potentially allogeneic—it can be biobanked for long-term use and may reduce risks associated with live-cell transplantation[1][3].
