Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ascor L 500 is a high‑concentration parenteral formulation of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) at 500 mg/mL, supplied as a sterile solution for injection. It is used to treat or prevent vitamin C deficiency, including scurvy, in situations where parenteral therapy is required, such as when oral administration is not possible, insufficient, or contraindicated. Pharmacologically, ascorbic acid functions as a water‑soluble antioxidant and an essential cofactor for multiple enzymatic reactions, notably in collagen synthesis, carnitine biosynthesis, and catecholamine production, and it facilitates non‑heme iron absorption and reduction. Intravenous or intramuscular administration rapidly restores plasma and tissue vitamin C levels, helping reverse the hematologic, dermatologic, and musculoskeletal manifestations of severe deficiency. At high doses, parenteral ascorbic acid can increase urinary oxalate excretion and acidify urine, which has implications for nephrolithiasis risk and drug–drug interactions, but its core mechanism of action remains nutritional replacement and antioxidant support.
