Overview

Ascorbic acid, commonly known as Vitamin C, is a water-soluble essential vitamin and potent antioxidant. It serves as a critical cofactor for several enzymes, including prolyl hydroxylases involved in collagen synthesis and enzymes required for catecholamine production. Beyond its role in preventing scurvy, ascorbic acid is investigated for its ability to modulate oxidative stress and inflammation in conditions such as sepsis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and chronic kidney disease. Emerging research highlights its role as an epigenetic modulator; it acts as a cofactor for Ten-Eleven Translocation (TET) methylcytosine dioxygenases, promoting DNA demethylation by converting 5-methylcytosine to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine. This mechanism is being explored as a therapeutic strategy in cancers with epigenetic aberrations, such as clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). It is also studied for neuroprotective potential in glaucoma and Parkinson's disease.
