This combination therapy consists of intravenous ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and oral ibuprofen, investigated for the treatment of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in neonates following perinatal asphyxia. Developed and studied by researchers at Al-Azhar University, the intervention aims to mitigate brain injury by targeting free oxygen radicals (via the antioxidant properties of ascorbic acid) and proinflammatory cytokines (via the anti-inflammatory properties of ibuprofen). Despite the theoretical neuroprotective benefits observed in animal models, a randomized controlled trial in term infants showed that early administration did not significantly improve mortality or neurodevelopmental outcomes at six months compared to placebo.
