Overview

This investigational treatment, developed by Minia University, is a local drug delivery system designed to treat gingival recession. It consists of a prefabricated mucoadhesive membrane, formulated with Carbopol polymers (carbomers), that serves as a vehicle for the sustained release of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) directly to the affected gingival tissues. Ascorbic acid is a critical cofactor for the enzymes prolyl hydroxylase and lysyl hydroxylase, which are essential for the post-translational modification and stabilization of collagen fibers. By enhancing collagen synthesis and providing antioxidant protection against oxidative stress in periodontal tissues, the treatment aims to promote gingival healing and curtail the progression of recession, potentially offering a non-surgical alternative to traditional soft tissue grafts.

Other names
Vitamin CL-ascorbic acid
