Ascorbyl laurate (ASC12) is a lipophilic derivative of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) produced by the esterification of the fatty acid lauric acid with the C-6 hydroxyl group of ascorbic acid. It functions as an amphiphilic surfactant capable of self-assembling into various nanostructures, including liquid lyotropic crystals and coagels, which are utilized as drug delivery systems. In pharmaceutical research, particularly for ophthalmic and transdermal applications, ascorbyl laurate serves a dual purpose: it acts as a penetration enhancer to improve the bioavailability of co-administered drugs and retains the potent antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties of Vitamin C. Its ability to form stable nanostructures allows for prolonged contact with biological membranes, such as the cornea, thereby enhancing the antioxidant status of tissues like the aqueous humor in models of glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
