Overview

Ascorbyl phosphate is a synthetic and stabilized derivative of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), commonly found in the forms of magnesium ascorbyl phosphate and sodium ascorbyl phosphate. It is primarily used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations for its antioxidant properties and ability to promote collagen synthesis. As an active precursor to vitamin C, it is more stable than pure ascorbic acid and can be readily absorbed into the skin where it exerts hydrating effects, neutralizes free radicals (antioxidant action), stimulates collagen production for anti-aging benefits, and may inhibit melanin production to lighten skin tone. Its mechanism involves conversion into free ascorbic acid by enzymatic degradation in the skin[1][2][6]. The compound is approved for use in topical formulations at concentrations typically ranging from 0.001% to 3%[1].
