Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ascotodin is an ophthalmic solution (eye drops) developed by Bruschettini for the prevention and treatment of ocular surface alterations, photophobia, and photophthalmic lesions. It is a fixed-dose combination of mebechinium metilsulfate (N-methylbenzoquinoline methylsulfate) and thonzylamine hydrochloride. Mebechinium metilsulfate acts as a photoprotective agent by physically absorbing ultraviolet (UV) radiation to protect ocular tissues from damage. Thonzylamine hydrochloride is a first-generation antihistamine that acts as an antagonist of the histamine H1 receptor and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors to alleviate ocular itching, redness, and irritation. Ascotodin is indicated to prevent occupational and occasional photophthalmic irritation and lesions caused by prolonged exposure to UV rays or intense light, to reduce irritation from light diffraction in contact lens wearers, and to treat conditions dominated by photophobia, actinic/electrical ophthalmias, keratitis, and iritis.
