Overview

Asenapine is an atypical antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar I disorder in adults and children aged 10 years and older. It works by balancing brain chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin to improve thinking, mood, and behavior. Asenapine is available in sublingual tablet form (Saphris) and transdermal patch form (Secuado). It acts primarily as a multireceptor antagonist with strong activity at serotonin 5-HT2A receptors and dopamine D2 receptors. Compared to first-generation antipsychotics, it has a lower incidence of extrapyramidal side effects due to its unique receptor profile[2][3][4].
