Overview

Ashokarishtam (also spelled Ashokarishta or Asokarishtam) is a classical Ayurvedic fermented liquid preparation (arishta) traditionally used as a uterine tonic to support women's reproductive health. It is prepared through the natural fermentation of a decoction of Ashoka (Saraca asoca) stem bark, combined with jaggery, Dhataki (Woodfordia fruticosa) flowers (which act as the fermenting agent), and various supporting herbs such as Triphala, Musta, Daruharidra, and ginger. The fermentation process naturally generates a mild alcohol content (typically 5–10% v/v), which serves as a preservative and enhances the extraction and bioavailability of active herbal constituents like tannins and flavonoids. Ashokarishtam is primarily indicated for gynecological disorders, including menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding), dysmenorrhea (painful periods), irregular menstrual cycles, and menopausal symptoms, where it is believed to strengthen uterine muscles, reduce pelvic spasms, and promote hormonal balance.
