Overview

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a natural product being investigated for its anti-cancer properties, primarily through its bioactive compound Withaferin A (WFA). In a Phase 1/2 clinical trial led by Sham Sunder Kakar at the University of Louisville, oral Ashwagandha is being evaluated in combination with liposomal doxorubicin (Doxil) for the treatment of recurrent ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, and primary peritoneal carcinoma. Preclinical evidence suggests that Withaferin A targets and reduces cancer stem cell populations, potentially enhancing the efficacy of standard chemotherapy and overcoming resistance. The combination therapy aims to determine the maximum tolerated dose and feasibility of adding Ashwagandha to a standard liposomal doxorubicin regimen.
