Overview

Asiaticoside is a naturally occurring triterpenoid saponin primarily isolated from the plant Centella asiatica. It exhibits a wide range of pharmacological activities including anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antioxidant, wound healing, antiulcer, anxiolytic, antidepressant-like effects, antifibrotic, antibacterial, antiarthritic, antitumor and immunomodulatory properties. Asiaticoside has been shown to promote collagen synthesis and skin hydration and is used in the treatment of various skin abnormalities such as burns and ulcers. Mechanistically, it acts through multiple pathways including inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α and IL-1β), upregulation of antioxidant defenses (e.g., glutathione), modulation of apoptosis-related proteins (Bcl-2/Bax ratio), activation of cAMP/PKA signaling pathway in CNS disorders (including depression models), suppression of melanogenesis via MITF inhibition for skin whitening applications and enhancement of wound healing by promoting cell migration and growth. Asiaticoside is an active ingredient in topical formulations like Madecassol marketed for wound healing indications[1][2][4][5][6].
