Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Abiraterone decanoate is a long-acting prodrug of abiraterone designed for intramuscular injection. It acts as an androgen biosynthesis inhibitor by selectively inhibiting the enzyme steroid 17-alpha-hydroxylase (CYP17A1), which is critical in testosterone production. By blocking this enzyme, abiraterone decanoate reduces androgen levels and suppresses tumor growth in prostate cancer. Unlike the oral formulation abiraterone acetate (AA), abiraterone decanoate is administered as a depot injection and may offer improved pharmacokinetics and patient compliance. The drug was originally developed by Propella Therapeutics and later acquired by Astellas Pharma. Its primary indication is advanced prostate cancer—including metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) and metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC)[3][4][6].
