ASP7317 is a regenerative cell therapy composed of human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. Originally developed by Ocata Therapeutics (formerly Advanced Cell Technology) and subsequently acquired by Astellas Pharma, the therapy is designed to treat advanced forms of retinal degeneration, including geographic atrophy secondary to dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and Stargardt's macular dystrophy. The treatment involves a subretinal injection of a suspension of mature, differentiated RPE cells intended to engraft and restore the functional RPE layer, which is critical for photoreceptor health and visual function. Clinical development has focused on safety, tolerability, and the potential for these cells to slow or reverse vision loss, often accompanied by short-term immunosuppressive therapy (such as tacrolimus) to prevent graft rejection.
