Overview

**Asparagus extract** is derived from species such as Asparagus officinalis (garden asparagus) and Asparagus cochinchinensis (Chinese asparagus), and is used primarily as a dietary supplement for its proposed diuretic, hypoglycemic, antihypertensive, hypocholesterolemic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and anticancer effects[1][2][3]. Mechanistic studies suggest asparagus extract acts via modulation of various pathways including ACE inhibition (antihypertensive effect), mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis (anticancer effect), and inhibition of inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha and IL-1 (anti-inflammatory effect)[1][2][3]. Bioactive constituents include steroidal saponins, flavonoids (rutin, quercetin, kaempferol), polysaccharides, and amino acids. While animal and in vitro studies support these activities, clinical evidence for therapeutic efficacy remains limited, and no pharmaceutical indications are approved[1][2][3].
