Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Asparagus racemosus root extract, commonly known as Shatavari, is a botanical extract derived from the roots of the *Asparagus racemosus* plant, which is traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine. It contains a complex mixture of phytochemicals, including steroidal saponins (shatavarins), isoflavones, and polysaccharides. The extract is primarily utilized as a dietary supplement for its galactagogue properties to support lactation and for the management of perimenopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and mood disturbances. Its pharmacological effects are thought to be mediated through the modulation of estrogen receptors and the enhancement of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression. Additionally, preclinical research has explored its potential in treating triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), where it may induce tumor cell differentiation and inhibit signaling pathways associated with growth and progression, specifically targeting MTHFD1 and MAP4K4.
