Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aspergillus oryzae fermented camellia japonica extract is a natural biologic ingredient with applications in both cosmetics and potentially oncology. For skincare, it is developed by Shiseido and Yaegaki Sake & Spirits, Inc. by fermenting camellia seed pomace (a byproduct of camellia oil production) with *Aspergillus oryzae*. [1] Its mechanism for anti-aging involves promoting the expression of the chemokine CXCL9 in epidermal keratinocytes, which in turn helps the immune system clear senescent fibroblasts. [1] This version is already used in Shiseido's cosmetic products. A separate line of research has investigated an extract from fermented *Camellia japonica* pericarp for its anticancer properties. [2] This extract, referred to as AOFE, demonstrated activity against head and neck cancer cells by inhibiting the IGFBP-2/mTOR signaling pathway. [2, 3, 4] This effect was correlated with an increased concentration of gallic acid resulting from the fermentation process. [2, 3, 4]
