Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Asperphenin A** is a bioactive natural product classified as a lipopeptidyl benzophenone metabolite, isolated from marine-derived *Aspergillus* sp. fungus. It exhibits potent antitumor activity, particularly against colon cancer cells. The mechanism involves G2/M cell cycle arrest followed by apoptosis, induction of microtubule disassembly, and increased reactive oxygen species in cancer cells. In preclinical models, asperphenin A suppressed tumor growth with minimal toxicity and showed synergistic effects when combined with irinotecan (a topoisomerase I inhibitor). The aryl ketone moiety in its molecular structure is critical for its activity. Asperphenin A represents a novel chemotherapeutic lead compound from marine microorganisms[6].
