Overview

Aspirair is an inhaled dry powder formulation of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) developed by Vectura Group. It was designed to be administered via a proprietary dry powder inhaler to patients experiencing the onset of an acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The primary therapeutic goal was to achieve rapid systemic absorption and immediate inhibition of platelet aggregation, potentially providing a faster onset of action compared to traditional oral aspirin. Aspirin acts by irreversibly inhibiting cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes, thereby blocking the synthesis of thromboxane A2, a potent mediator of platelet activation and vasoconstriction. By bypassing the gastrointestinal tract, Aspirair aimed to reduce the time to therapeutic effect during critical cardiac events, although development was eventually discontinued after Phase 2 clinical trials.
