Aspirin + lamivudine is a combination therapy being evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials by Fudan University for the prevention of recurrence in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) following radical surgery. Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that irreversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), thereby reducing the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins and potentially exerting anti-tumor effects through the inhibition of platelet-mediated inflammatory pathways. Lamivudine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor that suppresses HBV replication by targeting the viral DNA polymerase. The combination aims to leverage the antiviral effects of lamivudine and the potential chemopreventive properties of aspirin to improve survival outcomes and reduce the high rate of post-surgical recurrence in HBV-infected liver cancer patients.
