Aster root (Chinese name: 紫菀; pinyin: Zi Wan) is the dried root and rhizome of the plant *Aster tataricus* L.f., used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is classified as warm in nature and bitter in flavor. The primary actions are to moisten the lungs, direct qi downward to eliminate phlegm, and relieve cough. It is commonly prescribed for acute and chronic coughs with copious phlegm or dyspnea and can be found as a key ingredient in classic TCM formulas such as Zhi Sou San. The herb acts mainly on the lung meridian. Its mechanism of action includes antitussive (cough-suppressing) and expectorant effects[5][7][9].
