Aster tataricus

Aster tataricus (Tatarian aster) is a perennial herb whose roots and rhizomes, known as Zi Wan in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), are traditionally used for their antitussive and expectorant properties. In the context of recent clinical research, it is being evaluated as an adjunct therapy for functional constipation. A Phase 0 clinical trial sponsored by Guangzhou Panyu Hexian Memorial Hospital is investigating whether adding Aster tataricus and Raphani Semen to the traditional Maziren Decoction improves symptoms compared to the decoction alone. The plant contains various bioactive compounds, including triterpenoid saponins (asterosaponins), cyclic peptides (astins), and flavonoids, which are thought to contribute to its pharmacological effects on respiratory and gastrointestinal health.
