Astodrimer is a lysine-based dendrimer with naphthalene disulfonic acid surface groups, developed as a non-antibiotic, broad-spectrum antimicrobial and antiviral agent. It acts locally and is not systemically absorbed. Its primary mechanism of action involves blocking the attachment of pathogenic bacteria to epithelial cells and disrupting biofilms, which are key in the pathogenesis and recurrence of bacterial vaginosis (BV). Astodrimer also exhibits antiviral activity by binding to viral particles—such as HIV gp120 or SARS-CoV‑2 spike protein—thereby preventing their entry into host cells. The drug has been formulated for vaginal gel (for treatment and prevention of bacterial vaginosis) and nasal spray (for potential reduction of respiratory viral infections including COVID‑19). It is marketed for bacterial vaginosis in several regions, with ongoing development for other indications including COVID‑19 infection prevention[2][4][5][6].
