Overview

Astragalus decoction is a traditional herbal preparation made by boiling the dried root of Astragalus membranaceus (commonly known as huang qi) in water to extract its active compounds. It is a classic form of administration in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is used both alone and as part of polyherbal formulas. Astragalus is considered an adaptogen, believed to enhance the body's resistance to physical, environmental, and emotional stressors. The main bioactive components include polysaccharides, saponins (astragalosides), and flavonoids. The proposed mechanisms of action for astragalus decoction include immunomodulation—stimulating immune cell activity and reducing inflammation—as well as antioxidant effects. In TCM practice, it is used as a Spleen Qi tonic (to boost energy and digestion) and Lung Qi tonic (to support respiratory health). Modern research has explored its use for conditions such as diabetes (for blood sugar control), chronic kidney disease, chemotherapy side effect reduction, upper respiratory infections, chronic fatigue syndrome, allergies, cardiovascular health support due to antioxidant properties, wound healing when applied topically or taken orally[1][2][3][4][5][6]. There is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence supporting most claimed uses; however early studies suggest possible benefits in immune enhancement and adjunctive therapy during chemotherapy or for certain metabolic disorders[1][2][3]. Safety data indicate that oral doses up to 60 grams per day for up to four months are generally well tolerated by adults[2][3]. Astragalus may interact with immunosuppressants or antidiabetic drugs.
