This is a combination therapy for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), consisting of the herbal extract astragalus polysaccharide (from Astragalus membranaceus) administered alongside the chemotherapy agents cisplatin and vinorelbine. The regimen aims to improve quality of life, reduce chemotherapy-induced side effects such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, pain, and loss of appetite, and potentially enhance immune function. Clinical trials have shown that this combination significantly improves overall quality of life compared to chemotherapy alone[1][3][4]. Astragalus polysaccharide acts as an immunomodulator with antitumor properties by stimulating immune cells, disrupting the cell cycle in cancer cells, inhibiting signal transduction pathways like PI3K/Akt/mTOR and Akt/mTOR/p70S6K, activating autophagy in tumor cells, and improving immune adaptation to the tumor microenvironment[2][7]. Cisplatin is a platinum-based alkylating agent that crosslinks DNA strands; vinorelbine is a vinca alkaloid that inhibits microtubule formation during mitosis. The combination has been studied primarily in China for advanced NSCLC.
