Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Astragalus total saponins (ATS) is a purified botanical extract derived from the root of *Astragalus membranaceus* (Fisch.) Bunge, a staple of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Developed as a pharmaceutical product by Shanxi Taisheng Pharmaceutical, it is primarily indicated for the treatment of chronic stable angina pectoris. The extract is a complex mixture of triterpene saponins, with Astragaloside IV serving as a key active constituent and quality marker. ATS exerts cardioprotective effects by improving myocardial energy metabolism, reducing oxidative stress, and inhibiting cardiomyocyte apoptosis. It has been shown to activate the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway and modulate calcium homeostasis via the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase (SERCA), thereby enhancing cardiac function and alleviating ischemic symptoms in patients with coronary heart disease.
