AstriVax refers to a pipeline of vaccine candidates, most notably a therapeutic vaccine for chronic hepatitis B, developed using the proprietary Plasmid Launched Live Attenuated Virus (PLLAV) platform. Developed by the KU Leuven spin-off AstriVax, this technology utilizes a DNA plasmid to deliver the genetic blueprint of a live attenuated virus, specifically the yellow fever YF17D strain. Once administered, the plasmid enters host cells and "launches" the replication of the attenuated virus, which has been engineered to express target antigens from the hepatitis B virus (HBV). This approach combines the stability and ease of manufacturing associated with DNA vaccines with the high immunogenicity and comprehensive immune activation (including both T-cell and B-cell responses) characteristic of live attenuated vaccines. The platform is also being utilized to develop a more stable, cold-chain independent prophylactic vaccine for yellow fever.
