Overview

Astrostem is an autologous stem cell therapy consisting of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from a patient's own adipose tissue. The therapy involves isolating stem cells from a lipoaspirate, expanding them ex vivo, and in some protocols, activating them via the Wnt signaling pathway to enhance their regenerative and communicative potential. Astrostem is primarily being developed for neurodegenerative conditions, most notably Alzheimer's disease, where it is administered either intravenously or directly into the lateral ventricles of the brain (intracerebroventricularly) via an Ommaya reservoir to bypass the blood-brain barrier. The mechanism of action involves reducing neuroinflammation and decreasing the levels of pathological proteins such as amyloid-beta and phosphorylated tau (p-Tau), while promoting the repair of damaged neurons. The therapy is also under investigation for other indications, including Buerger's disease, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, and multiple sclerosis.
