Overview

Asvasiran is a small interfering RNA (siRNA) therapeutic developed for the treatment or prevention of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. It specifically targets the nucleocapsid (N) gene of RSV and inhibits viral replication through RNA interference. The drug was developed by Alnylam Pharmaceuticals and has been investigated in both intranasal and aerosolized formulations. Its mechanism involves modulating the nucleocapsid protein via sequence-specific mRNA degradation, thereby preventing production of essential viral proteins required for replication[1][2][3][4][5]. Development was suspended after reaching Phase II clinical trials for RSV infections[3][5].
