Overview

Aszora is a bisphosphonate medication developed by Anwerina Deutschland GmbH, containing the active ingredient zoledronic acid. It is a small molecule inhibitor of farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase (FPPS), an enzyme in the mevalonate pathway. By inhibiting FPPS, Aszora prevents the prenylation of small GTP-binding proteins essential for osteoclast function and survival, thereby reducing osteoclast-mediated bone resorption and stabilizing the bone matrix. It is primarily indicated for the prevention of skeletal-related complications, such as pathological fractures, spinal cord compression, and the need for radiation or surgery to bone, in adult patients with advanced malignancies involving bone, particularly those with bone metastases from solid tumors or multiple myeloma. It is also used to treat tumor-induced hypercalcemia. The medication is available in multiple formulations, including a concentrate for infusion and a ready-to-use infusion solution.
