Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AT-001 is a specialized selenium-enriched yeast formulation developed by Alltech Life Sciences for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Unlike inorganic selenium salts, AT-001 provides selenium in an organic form, primarily selenomethionine, produced through a proprietary fermentation process using *Saccharomyces cerevisiae*. This organic form is highly bioavailable and serves as a precursor for the synthesis of essential selenoproteins, including glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and thioredoxin reductase (TrxR). These enzymes are critical components of the brain's antioxidant defense system, neutralizing reactive oxygen species and protecting neurons from oxidative damage. AT-001 has been evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials to assess its safety and its ability to reduce brain oxidative stress in healthy elderly volunteers, with the goal of slowing the neurodegenerative processes associated with Alzheimer's disease.
