ATAC (Adoptive Transfer of Alloreactive Cells) Therapy is an investigational allogeneic cellular immunotherapy developed by Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont for the treatment of poor-prognosis, refractory, or relapsed acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The therapy involves the infusion of unselected peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from a mismatched (HLA-incompatible) donor following induction or consolidation chemotherapy. The mechanism relies on the 'Graft-versus-Leukemia' (GvL) effect, where the mismatched donor immune cells recognize and attack the patient's leukemic cells. Unlike traditional hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, the mismatched cells are expected to be eventually rejected by the patient's immune system, thereby providing a transient anti-tumor effect while minimizing the risk of chronic graft-versus-host disease (GvHD).
