Overview
Atagabalin is a drug that was developed as a gabapentinoid, structurally related to pregabalin and gabapentin. Gabapentinoids are analogues of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) but do not act directly on GABA receptors. Instead, they exert their effects primarily by binding to the α2δ subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system, thereby modulating neurotransmitter release and neuronal excitability. Atagabalin was investigated for its potential use in treating conditions such as anxiety disorders and insomnia due to its anxiolytic and sedative properties. However, development of atagabalin was discontinued before it reached regulatory approval.
