atazanavir

Atazanavir is an antiretroviral drug of the protease inhibitor class used in combination with other antiretrovirals for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in adults and children. It works by binding to and inhibiting HIV-1 protease, an enzyme required for the cleavage of viral polyprotein precursors into functional proteins, thereby preventing the formation of mature infectious viral particles. Atazanavir is distinguished from other protease inhibitors by its once-daily dosing and a more favorable lipid profile. It was developed by Bristol Myers Squibb and approved by the FDA in 2003[1][2][7].
