Overview

Atazanavir + ritonavir is a fixed-dose combination antiretroviral medication used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS. It combines two small molecule drugs: atazanavir, a protease inhibitor that blocks the activity of HIV protease enzyme required for viral replication, and ritonavir, which acts primarily as a pharmacokinetic enhancer by inhibiting cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), thereby increasing plasma concentrations of atazanavir. This combination is indicated for use with other antiretroviral agents in adults and children for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Atazanavir + ritonavir is taken orally once daily with food. The regimen is included on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines[5][1][7].
