Overview

This is a combination regimen of three antiretroviral drugs used primarily in the treatment of HIV infection. Atazanavir is a protease inhibitor, usually administered with ritonavir as a pharmacokinetic booster to increase its plasma concentration. Dolutegravir is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) that blocks the integration of viral DNA into the host genome, thereby inhibiting HIV replication. This combination can be used as a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI)-sparing regimen for patients with virological failure or resistance to other regimens, and has also been studied in COVID‐19 patients as part of investigational therapy[1][2][5]. The regimen offers a high genetic barrier to resistance and may be considered for individuals who have developed resistance mutations to NRTIs and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs)[1].
