Atazanavir + tenofovir + emtricitabine is a combination antiretroviral therapy used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. This regimen combines three agents: - Atazanavir, a protease inhibitor that blocks the HIV protease enzyme, preventing viral replication. - Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that inhibits HIV reverse transcriptase, blocking viral DNA synthesis. - Emtricitabine, a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that also inhibits HIV reverse transcriptase. Together, these drugs suppress HIV replication and are used as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). The combination is not available as a single fixed-dose tablet but is commonly prescribed as individual components taken together. This regimen does not cure HIV/AIDS but helps control the infection and delay disease progression. Atazanavir was developed by Bristol Myers Squibb; tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine were developed by Gilead.
