Overview

Atezolizumab is a fully humanized monoclonal antibody of the IgG1 isotype that targets programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1). By binding to PD-L1, it blocks its interaction with PD-1 and B7-1 receptors on T cells and antigen-presenting cells. This inhibition removes a key immune checkpoint used by cancer cells to evade immune detection, thereby enhancing the body’s anti-tumor immune response. Atezolizumab is primarily indicated for various cancers including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), small cell lung cancer (SCLC), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), urothelial carcinoma, alveolar soft part sarcoma, and melanoma. It was developed by Genentech/Roche and first approved in 2016 as an immunotherapy for advanced or metastatic cancers[1][2][3][10].
