This combination therapy consists of the immune checkpoint inhibitor atezolizumab, the anti-angiogenic monoclonal antibody bevacizumab, and the amino acid supplement beta-alanine. It is being investigated by Peking Union Medical College Hospital as a first-line treatment for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Atezolizumab targets programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) to restore anti-tumor T-cell activity, while bevacizumab inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to suppress tumor angiogenesis and potentially enhance immune cell infiltration. Beta-alanine is added as a metabolic and nutritional adjunct to potentially improve physical performance and metabolic regulation in patients undergoing standard-of-care immunotherapy.
