This is a combination therapy consisting of atezolizumab (an anti-PD-L1 immunotherapy), carboplatin and cisplatin (platinum-based chemotherapies), and pemetrexed (an antifolate antineoplastic agent). The combination is used primarily for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Atezolizumab works by binding to PD-L1 and blocking its interactions with PD-1 and B7.1 receptors, thereby enabling T-cell activation and immune response against cancer cells. Carboplatin and cisplatin are platinum compounds that bind to and cross-link DNA, ultimately triggering apoptosis in cancer cells. Pemetrexed is a folate analog that inhibits multiple enzymes involved in folate metabolism and DNA synthesis, including thymidylate synthase, dihydrofolate reductase, and glycinamide ribonucleotide formyltransferase.
