Overview

ATG5 siRNA is a small interfering RNA designed to silence the expression of the Autophagy-related 5 (ATG5) gene. ATG5 is an essential protein for the formation of autophagosomes, playing a central role in the autophagy pathway. By knocking down ATG5, researchers can inhibit autophagy to investigate its role in cell survival, apoptosis, and disease progression. In experimental settings, ATG5 siRNA has been used to study its effects on various conditions, including multiple myeloma, lung cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and inflammatory diseases like asthma and colitis. It is frequently employed to determine whether a drug's effect is mediated through autophagy or to sensitize cancer cells to chemotherapy by blocking protective autophagy. While primarily used as a research tool, it represents a potential therapeutic strategy for diseases where autophagy contributes to pathology.
